The BYD SEAL U DM-i brings new inspiration to the PHEV class. It utilises BYD’s advanced Super DM (Dual Mode) Technology, that prioritises electric power for around 90% of driving conditions, delivering exceptional range and smooth, quiet driving performance, while simultaneously showing compassion to the environment.

Exclusively developed by BYD, Super DM Technology significantly uses electric based hybrid architecture. This features a high-power electric motor and a high-capacity BYD Blade Battery as its primary power source, only using the internal combustion engine for assistance. Economical Choice
Currently*, the BYD SEAL U DM-i falls below the £40,000 list price band for Vehicle Excise Duty and is also viewed more favourably due to its low tailpipe emission credentials. SEAL U DM-i Comfort emits just 9 g/km, while the SEAL U DM-i Boost emits 20.5 g/km and SEAL U DM-i Design emits 26 g/km. This also makes it a more cost-effective proposition than standard vehicles relying solely on internal combustion engines with the Benefit-in-Kind* company car tax.

CONCEPT, DESIGN & FEATURES
Inspired by the beauty and athleticism of nature, the BYD SEAL U DM-i uses Ocean X Design Language, evoking elegance and energy, characterised by smooth, dynamic lines and X-front face.

Exterior:
The BYD SEAL U DM-i adopts BYD’s distinctive ‘Ocean Aesthetics’ design philosophy, following the lead from the BYD SEAL (D-segment sedan) and BYD DOLPHIN (C-segment hatchback). Designed by the team led by Wolfgang Egger, BYD’s Global Design Director, its flowing nature-inspired design brings a sense of grace, power and energy, combined with a technology-rich experience that captivates and makes an emotional connection. The BYD SEAL U DM-i is an elegant, perfectly balanced car that is also practical and integral to the demands of modern family life.

The car’s iconic front face has a powerful sense of forward motion, with an ‘X-shape’ in the dynamic perspective – the X representing ‘the ocean and the unknown’ with captivating flowing contours that provide a sense of strength and movement inspired by waves. Adding to this, the rounded front aspect features a sloping bonnet with integrated U-shaped headlights; the dual lenses creating a powerful, impactful front, emphasising the car’s high-tech credentials. The headlight design is influenced by water droplets, while the front integrated bumper with air vents and decorative accents also enhances the overall dynamic effect.

The smooth and natural flow continues when viewed from the side profile. The pronounced upper beltline sweeps seamlessly from the headlights to the taillights. Meanwhile, the lower skirt line is sleek and gently sloped, further accentuated by the graceful concave surface within the side panel design to effectively elevate the SUV’s overall visual presence. This is contrasted by a muscular body that feels purposeful and reassuring, offset further by the highly defined side skirt. Aluminium roof rails and window trims further accentuate the overall visual appeal from the side perspective. Eye-catching, aerodynamic 19-inch bi-colour spoked alloy wheels provide the finishing touch that gives this SUV a modern vibe, a feel that is further offset by the privacy glass in the rear of the vehicle.

Viewed from the rear, the BYD SEAL DM-i is equally imposing, with a design that complements the rounded edges of the front face, producing harmonious and well-proportioned aesthetics.  The rear bumper is accentuated with black and silver detailing, reinforcing its unique identity. The progressive horizontal full width rear lightbar and LED taillights draw inspiration from water droplets and when illuminated, seamlessly correspond with the dot matrix elements of the front headlights.

With carefully designed proportions and impressively low drag coefficient providing excellent aerodynamic performance, the BYD SEAL U DM-i measures 4775mm in length, 1890 mm in width and 1670 mm in height.

Interior:
Complemented by its generous 2765 mm wheelbase and flat floor, the BYD SEAL U DM-i offers generous space and legroom for five occupants including their luggage making it a practical choice for families and modern lifestyles.  While it scores on practicality, there is certainly no compromise on finesse and comfort, with a spacious cabin finished to a high specification with attention to detail at every touchpoint and excellent NVH for impressively quiet on-board experiences.

The interior of the BYD SEAL U DM-i has a premium, executive feel. It harmoniously combines an elegant high-quality finish with an exceptional depth of advanced technology and intelligent connected experiences to make journeys safer and altogether more pleasurable.

A large panoramic electric sunroof and shade is standard on the Boost and Design trim options making the cabin area light and airy. The interior atmosphere can be further enhanced with enveloping 31-colour rhythm-reactive ambient lighting.

The premium ergonomically designed seats are upholstered as standard in sustainable and high-quality vegan leather with contrasting stitching, extending to parts of the dashboard, door panels and centre console. The large front seats are electronically multi adjustable, as well as heated and ventilated as standard. The driver’s seat, with integrated headrest, offers 8-way electric adjustment including position memory with the passenger seat also having an integrated headrest and 4-way adjustment, for comfort and wellbeing. Both are heated and ventilated as standard. Travelling in the rear is equally comfortable with a flat floor design that provides generous legroom for passengers. The rear seats have manually adjustable headrests. The BYD SEAL U DM-i has a multi-function, heated steering wheel finished in vegan leather as standard with a full range of adjustability.

A large floating rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen creates a high-tech focal point within the Intelligent Cockpit with the option to view information landscape or portrait for ease of vision. There is also 12.3-inch TFT full LCD instrument panel behind the steering wheel and a premium Infinity 10-speaker audio system. There are two wireless charging docks for mobile phones on top of the centre console. Additionally, there are 2 x Rear USB ports (2 x 18 W Type C), 2 x Front USB ports (1 x 18 W Type C + 1 x 60W Type C) for charging devices.

The Ocean aesthetics theme and attention to detail are reflected in the exquisitely designed crystal gear shift creating another visual centrepiece of the interior, adding to the sophistication and technological elegance of the cabin design. There is also a cluster of carefully positioned control buttons.

The rear seats split 60:40 and when folded flat produce 1440 litres of space for luggage. Even when upright, there is still generous space of up to 425 litres. There are handy cupholders in the front centre armrests, and two in the rear. Glove compartments in the front, and side pockets and parcel shelf in the rear, accommodate other personal items that may be needed during the journey.

LED door lights and footlights are located in the front, with rear side reading lights. An auto-dimming rearview mirror comes as standard.

Occupants in both the front and rear seats can travel in comfort, with separate ventilation zones for comfort all-year round. They can also enjoy fresh air thanks to the PM2.5 air purification system which purifies the air from particles for optimum air quality in the passenger compartment, especially beneficial to those who suffer from hay fever or at times when the air quality is poor.

The are two variants of the BYD SEAL U DM-i available to consumers in the UK – Boost (Front-Wheel Drive) and Design (All-Wheel Drive).

BYD Super DM Technology – setting a new benchmark for PHEV efficiency
Super DM Technology, developed in-house by BYD, incorporates a highly efficient system that uses electric-based hybrid architecture. The technology is powered by an electric motor in 90% of driving conditions, therefore minimising reliance on petrol – reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions. It further benefits from excellent energy efficiency, making it an economical solution for motorists while being practical for both daily needs and long worry-free journeys. BYD Super DM Technology also produces a quiet, smooth ride that feels more like that of a pure-electric vehicle, with powerful acceleration and performance to match. It effortlessly adapts to different driving conditions.

The drivetrain consists of three main components that work seamlessly together: the Electric Hybrid System, the Xiaoyun Hybrid Engine and the Blade Battery.

This electric-based hybrid architecture differs from most other PHEV technologies as it only uses the internal combustion engine for assistance. This means the drivetrain prioritises electric power, therefore only having minimal reliance on fuel, making it kinder to the environment.

Intelligent Electric Hybrid System
The Electric Hybrid System (EHS) is a highly integrated powertrain that incorporates high-speed dual motors, dual controllers and advanced oil-cooling technology to increase motor power density and efficiency. The EHS utilises high-speed dual motors with a maximum speed of up to 15,000 rpm. With two separate functions, the P1 motor generates the power and the P3 motor drives the wheels. Furthermore, the electric motors use innovative hairpin technology which significantly improves heat dissipation performance. Peak efficiency can be as much as 97%, remaining stable above 90% for most of the time. The EHS also benefits from oil cooling technology that directly cools the heat source, enhancing dissipation capabilities, increasing motor power density to a maximum of 5.5 kW/kg. Finally, the highly Integrated Dual Motor Controller (IGBT) elevates the overall electronic control efficiency up to 98.9%.

A significant feature of the electric hybrid system is its ability to intelligently switch between the modes to prioritize electric propulsion whenever possible, providing an efficient and more environmentally friendly driving experience.

When the battery is fully charged and switched to EV mode, the vehicle becomes pure-electric, and when State of Charge (SoC) is low, it transforms into an ultra-low fuel consumption hybrid vehicle alleviating concerns about electric range. When travelling in urban areas, the electric motor powers the vehicle for most of the time.  

3 Driving Modes:
Pure EV mode:  quiet, smooth, responsive electric driving where the wheels are 100% driven by the electric motor, with industry leading NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness).

HEV mode: urban cycle provides high fuel economy and high performance. When the battery falls below the set state of charge, the combustion engine automatically engages as a generator and charges the battery with the electric motor driving the wheels.

HEV Parallel mode: the wheels are driven by both the electric motor and the combustion engine realising high power performance and good fuel efficiency. This mode produces fast, responsive acceleration when you need maximum power such as when overtaking on motorways.

With regenerative technology, the battery continues to charge while driving regardless of the selected mode.

Specially Developed Xiaoyun Petrol Engine
The BYD SEAL U DM-i utilises a dedicated ‘Xiaoyun’ petrol engine producing world-leading thermal efficiency, which has been specifically developed in-house for the BYD Super DM Technology plug-in hybrid drivetrain. There are two engine variants.

BYD Blade Battery
BYD has been at the forefront of power battery research and development for more than 29 years. As such, the BYD SEAL U DM-i benefits from ground-breaking battery technology developed for safety, durability and performance.

The 18.3 kWh BYD Blade Battery has been tailor-made for the BYD SEAL U DM-i, and increases space utilisation by 50% compared to traditional battery packs. Furthermore, BYD has increased the number of battery cells for improved energy density and longer range. Unlike most PHEVs, the battery is also suitable for fast DC charging making the BYD SEAL U DM-i a convenient charging choice too.

Battery safety is a priority within the design. Setting an exceptional level of safety, the Blade Battery has undergone stringent tests including the Nail Penetration Test, the most rigorous way to test battery thermal runaway, simulating the consequences of a serious road accident.  It uses Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) as its cathode material, which offers a much higher level of safety than conventional lithium-ion batteries. LFP batteries are 100% free of cobalt, a material that raises ethical and environmental concerns in the mining industry. In addition, LFP batteries are more resistant to extreme temperatures without the risk of igniting or exploding. They have better thermal stability and are less sensitive to temperature fluctuations, while they can withstand more charge and discharge cycles with hardly any loss of capacity. This makes these batteries particularly durable.

Vehicle-to-Load
Furthermore, the battery pack in the BYD SEAL U DM-i supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) as standard, allowing the car to be used as a portable power supply for multiple electrical devices. This feature is particularly functional and useful in areas where there is no power socket available and increases the SUV’s versatility.

PERFORMANCE
The BYD SEAL U DM-i with Super DM Technology revolutionises eco-friendly journeys with an exceptional all-round experience, bringing benefits that combine impressive energy efficiency and fuel economy, with quick and responsive acceleration, as well as quiet and smooth ride comfort.

Combining power and efficiency with comfort and quietness, the BYD SEAL U DM-i is an outstanding all-round family sized car. With total power of up to 238 kW, the BYD SEAL U DM-i produces a dynamic driving experience, with high power performance, fast acceleration and agile responsiveness.

Acceleration from 0-62mph is comparable to that of 2.0T engine. The electric motor boasts an impressive 10 ms-level response time, adding a remarkable level of precision to the driving dynamics.

The Boost variant (front wheel drive) accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.9 secs with a top speed of 106 mph, while the Design (all-wheel drive) can reach 0-62 in just 5.9 secs with a top speed of 112 mph.  Both have an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.34 cd. Both are equipped with Macpherson front suspension and multi-link rear suspension producing excellent handling, stability and ride quality.

The electric-centric hybrid system also makes quietness and a smooth ride other key features of the BYD SEAL U DM-i, with excellent NVH. Noise levels are minimised whether driving in towns or on motorways. The vehicle delivers an exceptionally smooth ride, rather like a pure EV driving experience, with seamless gear shifts for effortless driving and comfortable journeys.

The BYD SEAL U DM-i also empowers economical eco-friendly driving with remarkable levels of energy efficiency and lower fuel consumption, providing a practical low-carbon option for eco-conscious consumers. The vehicle offers combined fuel consumption of just 44 mpg (Boost) or 38 mpg (Design) (WLTP, weighted combined). The electric combined consumption for the Boost version is 2.9 miles/Kwh for the Design 2.6 miles/kWh. The electric consumption for urban driving is 4.3 miles/kWh  (Boost) and 3.8 miles/kWh. A potent electric motor, with an exceptional 97% efficiency, delivers a reassuring and very economical performance.  The Boost front-wheel drive version has a range of up to 50 pure-electric miles or 671 miles combined, and the Design all-wheel drive achieves a range of up to 43 pure-electric miles or 540 miles combined.

Faster Charging
In addition to a comforting range, BYD’s Blade Battery also provides the convenience of faster charging. The BYD SEAL U DM-i is equipped with an 11kW on-board charger as standard. Moreover, each version of the SEAL U DM-i is also suitable for (DC) ultra-fast charging, which is unusual for a plug-in hybrid. With its standard 18 kW DC charging option, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% of its capacity in just 35 minutes.

INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY
The BYD SEAL U DM-i provides a haven of intelligent connected experiences, with leading infotainment and a high level of standard equipment making it excellent value in its category.  This includes ADAS intelligent driver assistance with a multitude of features, with active and passive functionality to make driving safer, easier and even more pleasurable.

Infotainment
The Intelligent Cockpit System is a core feature of the BYD SEAL U DM-i. At the heart of this is a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen giving access to a full range of vehicle information and 4G connected experiences, including Spotify, HERE navigation, smartphone integration via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Additionally, there is 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel displaying key information positioned behind the steering wheel.

There is also the safety benefit of Intelligent Voice Control activated via the ‘Hi BYD’ command.  Over-the-Air (OTA) updates are another feature.  Exceptional sound quality can be experienced by 10-speaker Infinity premium audio system, with FM and DAB+ radio.

(ADAS) Drive Assistance & Safety
There is an exceptional level of advanced driver assistance technology as standard equipment in the BYD SEAL U DM-i.  ADAS uses six radars and four cameras around the car. This includes functionality such as Adaptive and Intelligent Cruise Control, which allows the vehicle to monitor traffic ahead and maintain the intermediate distance to the vehicle in front by automatically reducing speed or accelerating to the preset speed. Meanwhile, the steering wheel is controlled to keep the car in the centre of the lane. This makes driving easier while increasing safety, especially in traffic jams after a long and tiring working day.

Safety for all the Family
Top-class vehicle safety is deeply rooted in BYD’s DNA and prioritised in the development of the car, making it the ideal family SUV.

As such, the BYD SEAL U DM-i uses high-strength steel for many parts of the body structure, and has been specifically designed for impressive occupant protection in case of a side and frontal impact.

Another example of BYD’s intelligent safety technology is a specially designed airbag that lifts the arm during a side pillar impact, preventing the arm from pinching the chest.  The car is comprehensively equipped with driver’s airbag, front passenger’s airbag, front centre airbag, side curtain airbags, pre-tensioned seatbelts. The BYD SEAL U DM-i has ISOFIX and i-Size child seat fixing points, in the front passenger and outer rear seats.

The BYD SEAL U DM-i prioritises child protection, both in and outside the vehicle.  The vehicle has been awarded the top score for both dynamic and static protection of child seats. It is also equipped with a child presence detection system, which uses dual radar monitoring to ensure that there are no children left in the vehicle. The active child pedestrian safety system is just as child-friendly, helping to protect children outside the vehicle, such as in residential areas with slow traffic.  Child safety lock is standard.

Vehicle safety is further enhanced with the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to alert drivers of potential tyre issues.

To help the driver safely manoeuvre the vehicle, the panoramic camera provides 360-degree visibility overhead and all around the car.  Meanwhile, Head-Up Display (as standard) clearly shows information on the front windscreen so the driver does not have to divert their eyes from the road ahead.

Cutting-edge lighting technology provides excellent visibility for night-time driving, producing a wider beam of light with functions that include High Beam Assist, Adaptive/ Automatic Headlights and Follow Me Home as standard.
