There is a choice of two powerful drivetrain options – the BYD SEAL Excellence (AWD) and BYD SEAL Design (RWD) in six stylish colour choices.

The stunning new BYD SEAL all-electric D-Saloon adopts BYD’s Ocean-X Design aesthetics, taking its inspiration from the power and beauty of the ocean to create a sleek, dynamic showstopper of a car that awakes the senses, evokes emotion and embraces the future of electric mobility. The BYD SEAL is the winner of a prestigious iF Design Award in 2023.

Exterior:
The BYD SEAL has been designed by a team led by BYD’s Global Design Director, Wolfgang Egger, creating a vehicle that portrays power, grace and athleticism, one that is both emotional and exciting.

Perfectly proportioned, the BYD SEAL has an ideal 0.61 axle length ratio with a length of 4800mm and a wheelbase of 2920mm; the vehicle’s wheelbase diameter and height of 1460mm make a perfect 1:2 ratio, a carefully defined ‘golden ratio’ that gives the BYD SEAL a dynamic and elegant stance. With a low-to-the-ground body that ‘slices through the wind’, the BYD SEAL has a drag coefficient of just 0.219 Cd.

Its sleek nature-inspired design is emotionally rich, high-tech and appealing. The car’s front face has a powerful sense of forward motion, with an ‘X-shape’ in the dynamic perspective – the X representing ‘the ocean and the unknown’. The BYD SEAL’s captivating contours provide a sense of the momentum of the waves. The rounded front aspect features a low bonnet with integrated LED headlights, creating a powerful, impactful front face akin to a sports car. The double cluster LED running lights in the front bumper resemble water ripples inspired by the ocean. These slender light bands create an arched shape and move in layers, echoing the beauty of surging waves.

The BYD SEAL’s side silhouette is smooth and natural, with a low front, sloping A-pillar, rounded roof, sloping fastback and slightly upturned ducktail shape, which emphasises the characteristic of a sports coupe. The concealed door handle design of the BYD SEAL, which is flush with the door when the vehicle is in motion, helps to enable airflow to pass at high speed, thereby reducing wind resistance and overall vehicle energy consumption. The ultra-stylish two-colour 19-inch alloy wheels as standard have a distinctive pattern and further punctuate the premium dynamic look and design theme of the BYD SEAL.

Viewing from the back, the BYD SEAL looks equally sporty, almost muscular, emphasised by a full-width light bar and dot matrix taillights that emulate water droplets, arranged in a progressive pattern, creating a sense of depth and modern technology.

The BYD SEAL is available in the UK in six attractive colour options – Ice Blue, Atlantis Grey, Polar White, Space Black or (optional) Shadow Green, and Indigo Grey, with a choice of two interior trim colours: Black or Tahiti Blue.

Interior:
In addition to its dynamic, intelligent and sporty character, the BYD SEAL has an impressive high-tech interior, and with high-quality finishes, it has a premium feel with various design features that continue the Ocean theme. The cockpit is infused with marine-inspired elements, creating a luxurious yet understated atmosphere.

The inspiration for the interior design came from the vehicle's unique front face, including the shape of the headlamps and the sweeping lines that extend left and right. These design elements were incorporated into the vehicle's interior, resulting in a distinctive instrument panel that complements the exterior design perfectly.

The centre console has a dynamic and powerful shape, resembling a seal emerging from the sea. Seamlessly bringing nature and technology together is the large trademark BYD rotatable 15.65 multimedia touchpad. Air conditioning settings are electronically adjusted and operated on the central display interface. There is also a 10.25-inch full instrument LCD panel. The crystal gear selector mirrors a large water droplet and is the control lever for all the key driving commands for the SEAL.

The narrow central tunnel section allows for maximum legroom for the driver and passenger, resulting in a more spacious and comfortable driving experience. This versatile four-door Saloon comfortably seats five people. The 2920 mm wheelbase provides occupants with legroom similar to that of an executive saloon. Cell-to-Body (CTB) architecture, combined with the compact ‘space-saving’ Blade Battery packaging, also provides occupants with plenty of headroom despite the car’s low-slung appearance.

The ergonomically designed front seats, finished in leather with intricate stitching detail, have a sporty appearance and offer excellent wrapping and posture support. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable in eight directions, while users of all sizes can find a comfortable driving position behind the four-way adjustable (multi-functional) steering wheel. In the AWD Excellence version, the driver’s seat has four-way power-adjustable lumbar support. The rear seats with adjustable headrests provide a comfortable seating position for three adult occupants. The seat back, cushion padding, as well as the angles of the rear seat back and cushion, have been fully optimised, easing any fatigue on long journeys. For the driver, there is also an antiglare rear view mirror.

Occupants can also count on plenty of light in the interior thanks to an oversized panoramic sunroof. And for optimum comfort, the front doors are fitted with double layered laminated glass for excellent sound and heat insulation. The rear doors feature privacy glass with a solar transmittance of ≤25%, providing enhanced shade and privacy for rear occupants. Coloured mood lighting creates a subtle ambience.

Further comfort is provided by auto air conditioning and heat pump. There is a dual air conditioning zone, air filter and negative ion generator.

There are two wireless charging docks for mobile phones on top of the centre console. The position can be adjusted and angled for a better view of the phone screen. It is convenient for passengers, and the face recognition function of the phones still works even if the central rotating large screen is in a vertical position.

The luggage compartment, with 402-litre capacity, further emphasises the practicality of the BYD SEAL. The RWD Design version also has an additional 53-litre ‘frunk’ (storage) under the bonnet. In addition, the BYD SEAL offers more than 20 flexible storage spaces for small items in the interior. As well as the standard centre armrest box, there is a functional semi-open storage space under the sub-dashboard.

The BYD SEAL will be offered in the UK in two trim levels: one with an 80kWh rear-wheel drive train and the other with an 80 kWh all-wheel drivetrain, with WLTP-ranges ranging from 323 miles (Excellence – AWD) to 354 miles for the RWD Design variant.

BYD e-Platform 3.0
Leading the next generation of EVs for safety, efficiency, intelligence, and larger cabin space is the e-Platform 3.0, featuring the 8-in-1 electric powertrain system, with overall efficiency surpassing 89%.

BYD e-Platform 3.0, developed exclusively for electric vehicles, has been designed to provide outstanding advantages in safety, intelligence, efficiency, and aesthetics, as well as performance.

Deep integration is a key factor of the BYD e-Platform 3.0. Core features at the heart of the e-Platform 3.0 are the Blade Battery, the 8-in-1 electric powertrain and the high-efficiency heat pump. The innovative 8-in-1 electric powertrain integrates the Vehicle Control Unit; the Battery Management System; the Power Distribution Unit; the Drive Motor; the Motor Controller; Transmission; DC-DC; On-Board Charger. Such deep integration delivers 89% system efficiency and includes the driving and braking functions, with an advanced powertrain domain controller for the rapid response and full utilisation of the electric motors.

The e-Platform 3.0 is an evolution from distributed, to centralised electrical and electronic architecture dramatically enhancing computing power to build a rich cloud-based application ecosystem. Such domain architecture provides the foundation for safe and intelligent driving. Improved intelligent experiences enable faster responsiveness and enhanced safety in extreme conditions.

Safety is further enhanced by the ultra-safe Blade Battery incorporated into the e-Platform 3.0. The flat elongated design of the battery also improves the structural rigidity of the e-Platform 3.0 in the event of a collision. Offering better protection, with a force transmission path exclusively for EVs, the BYD e-Platform 3.0 features a ‘multi-load path’ structure controlling how energy is absorbed by the car in the event of a collision, minimising intrusion into the passenger cabin. Passenger protection is further enhanced by a reinforced body structure with high torsional rigidity.

A highly scalable platform, it allows the flexibility of two-wheel or all-wheel driving. Additionally, the e-Platform 3.0 creates a brand-new body structure, with shorter front overhangs, longer wheelbase, lower centre of gravity, more space, sense of movement and dynamics, as well as a drag coefficient (Cd) as low as 0.21. The flat rear floor, made possible by the longer length and space saving Blade Battery, creates more rear passenger space.

Advanced Cell-to-Body Technology
The BYD SEAL is the first vehicle to implement BYD’s highly advanced Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology BYD SEAL which fully integrates the "Blade Battery" into the entire vehicle structure for unprecedented levels of safety, torsional rigidity, driving dynamics and space utilisation.

Cell-to-Body means the battery is incorporated into the entire vehicle structure. It integrates the battery pack’s top cover with the traditional body floor structure, forming a sandwich-like composition made up of the top cover, the Blade Battery and the tray. In addition, the CTB architecture uses a high-strength honeycomb aluminium panel structure, further enhancing vehicle safety. This greatly enhances the dynamic limit optimising the benefits of both the RWD and AWD layout, and the independent suspension structure comprising a front double-wishbone and five-link rear.

The CTB battery system serves as a source of energy, as well as a structural component. It contributes to the BYD SEAL’s exceptional torsional stiffness of an enormous 40,500 Nm/degree, increasing handling limits and offering an excellent platform for comfort, safety and performance.

Furthermore, CTB technology also improves space utilisation. Due to the reduced battery pack volume, the BYD SEAL has a 10 mm lower body height with the same clear height inside the vehicle compared with the conventional structure, resulting in a more low-slung shape, improved aerodynamic performance and visual impact, as well as more cabin space.

The all-new BYD SEAL has been awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading independent safety assessment program. The BYD SEAL performed to a very high standard throughout the whole safety test process, illustrating the vehicle’s exceptional active and passive safety credentials and the structural benefits of BYD CTB (Cell-to-Body) technology, and e-Platform 3.0.  The BYD SEAL achieved an excellent 89% score for Adult Occupant protection and 87% in Child Occupant tests with the Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology enhancing vehicle safety, with the passenger compartment remaining stable in the frontal offset test, showing good protection for both driver and passenger. Also, the BYD SEAL offered good protection against whiplash injuries.

Blade Battery
The BYD SEAL utilises ground-breaking battery technology. The revolutionary ultra-safe Blade Battery provides new levels of safety, durability and performance as well as increased battery space utilisation.

The Blade Battery uses Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) as its cathode material, which offers a much higher level of safety than conventional lithium-ion batteries. LFP batteries are 100% free of cobalt, a material that raises ethical and environmental concerns in the mining industry. In addition, LFP batteries are more resistant to extreme temperatures without the risk of igniting or exploding. They have better thermal stability and are less sensitive to temperature fluctuations, while they can withstand more charge and discharge cycles with hardly any loss of capacity. This makes these batteries particularly durable. With a height of only 110 mm for the entire battery pack, the Blade Battery also contributes to the efficient vehicle packaging and optimised interior space of the BYD SEAL.

BYD has, for over two decades, been a pioneer in power battery development. 28 years on, with over 5 million battery-powered cars produced for customers, BYD is firmly established as a market leader in this field and the world’s largest manufacturer of Lithium Iron-Phosphate batteries. Born out of this relentless research and development, and a major advancement for the EV industry, is the ground-breaking Blade Battery, an innovation launched by BYD in March 2020.

One of the major concerns in the EV-sector is battery safety. The Blade Battery has been developed to mitigate this, and takes battery safety to a new level, while offering outstanding strength, range, longevity and power. It is a battery that is ultra-safe with an ultra-strong structure for durability, while also offering ultra-long range and ultra-long lifespan. Safety is enhanced by the longer, flatter design for improved space utilisation of the battery pack.

The Blade Battery has undergone the most stringent of safety tests, surpassing demands of the Nail Penetration Test, the most rigorous way to test the thermal runaway of batteries. The Nail Penetration Test simulates the effects of a severe traffic accident and is considered ‘The Mount Everest’ of battery tests. During the Nail Penetration Test, the Blade Battery didn’t emit smoke or fire, and the surface temperature reached just 30–60 degrees centigrade. It also passed other extreme test conditions, such as being crushed, bent, being heated in a furnace to 300 degrees centigrade and overcharged by 260%. None of these resulted in a fire or explosion, making BYD Blade Battery a front-runner in safety for the fast-growing EV market.

Efficiency and longer range are further benefits of the Blade Battery, providing more power density for optimum performance and efficiencies, including faster charging. BYD Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology makes all the difference, with the Blade Battery increasing space ultiisation by 50%. This improves energy density and allows more batteries in a compact space, with a longer driving range. The ‘honeycomb-like aluminium’ design of the Blade Battery also provides greater rigidity and safety.

BYD’s battery technology also supports Vehicle to Load (V2L) allowing the BYD SEAL to be used as a portable power supply for electrical devices (total output up to 3000W).

High efficiency heat pump system as standard
Furthermore, the BYD SEAL is offered as standard with a high-efficiency heat pump system. This allows the efficient regulation of the battery temperature via direct cooling and direct heating of the refrigerant, as well as control of the passenger compartment temperature with low energy consumption. The heat pump can also absorb waste heat from the electric powertrain, while it can withstand temperatures ranging from -30 degrees centigrade to 60 degrees centigrade.

Athletic, sporty and dynamic, but also intelligent and equipped with a high-tech DNA, the BYD SEAL benefits from four core features under one roof.

State-of-the-art vehicle architecture based on the e-Platform 3.0 with Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology delivers unprecedented torsional rigidity and a low centre of gravity, all benefiting the driving dynamics of the BYD SEAL. In addition, the SEAL is the first BYD with independent suspension with double wishbones at the front and a five-link rear suspension, which also contributes to the excellent handling and vehicle control.

The BYD SEAL, with a golden axle-to-load ratio of 50:50, has a low centre of mass, and a low moment of inertia, which facilitates vehicle tail movement during turns and improves stability, providing a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

In the UK, the BYD SEAL will be offered with a choice of two drivetrains, both with a battery capacity of 82.5 kWh. The single-motor version (Design) with rear-wheel drive (RWD) has a power output of 230 kW (313 PS) and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds. The range is set at 354 miles (WLTP combined). The BYD SEAL ‘Excellence’ is the four-wheel drive (AWD) version with an electric motor on the front and rear axles (160 kW + 230 kW), resulting in a total power output of 390 kW (530 PS). This powerhouse accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds, while the range is set at 323 miles (WLTP combined).

The AWD Excellence version offers semi-active suspension technology with variable frequency dampers for ultimate responsiveness. When the road conditions are smooth, the damping is relatively high, allowing for more stable vehicle dynamics and better handling. When there are potholes or rough surfaces, the damping automatically reduces to absorb the impact of the road better, assuring a high-quality ride.

Intelligent Torque Adaption Control (iTAC) Technology
In addition, the BYD SEAL benefits from a newly BYD developed Intelligent Torque Adaption Control system (iTAC), elevating the handling and performance, and ensuring a smooth, comfortable and secure driving experience, dramatically improving stability and reducing the risk of skidding and wheel spinning. This innovative technology is a significant new addition, and replaces the old method of restoring vehicle dynamics, which could previously only control the vehicle by braking to reduce torque when encountering a skid.

BYD’s iTAC system continually monitors wheel speeds and motor resolver sensors, making accuracy recognition some 300 times faster. The iTAC system can predict situations such as loss of traction control and adjust the drivetrain and power pre-emptively, restoring the stability of the vehicle. This control is achieved in various ways such as transferring torque, appropriately reducing torque and outputting negative torque with fast motor response speed and more accurate speed adjustment. Due to this increased recognition speed and change in adjustment methods, iTAC can integrate the state of the vehicle with the driver’s commands, appropriately pre-empting and adjusting power distribution - improving safety performance by dramatically reducing skidding, as well as improving handling limits and driver comfort.

The BYD SEAL offers four distinct driving modes, catering for a variety of driving preferences and conditions. These modes include:

• ECO - prioritising energy efficiency and extending the driving range.
• NORMAL- providing a balanced driving experience for everyday use.
• SPORT - emphasising performance through aggressive acceleration and sharper handling.
• SNOW - enhancing traction and stability on slippery surfaces like snow or ice.

Charging and Range
While being a true showstopper in terms of aesthetics and performance, the BYD SEAL with an impressive range, is a practical option to suit the varied lifestyles of many consumers. The RWD Design version has a range set at 354 miles (WLTP combined) and the AWD Excellence version offers a range of 323 miles (WLTP combined.)

Customers of the BYD SEAL benefit from a high-voltage electric drive boost charging solution, which provides the convenience of faster charging. This technology innovatively uses the motor inductor to replace the boost inductor in the original boost solution, to meet the 420-750V voltage range of charging piles with high-power DC charging. During the charging process, the BYD SEAL reduces the heat generation of the charging and distribution assembly for more reliable performance.

The BYD SEAL offers an 11 kW 3-phase on-board charger for AC charging as standard, and can be fast charged with a maximum 150 kW. With this amount of power, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes.

The Dynaudio Performance Audio System with 12 speakers provides premium quality acoustics, and smartphone wireless charging is another convenient feature. It is equipped with FM/DAB+ radio.

BYD CONNECT APP
The BYD Connect App for smartphones provides real-time vehicle status information, allowing users to remotely activate and control key functions. From remotely checking battery charge levels and driving range, to remote climate pre-conditioning and door lock/unlock controls, BYD Connect App with regularly updated Over-the-Air (OTA) features, ensures the car is ready for an electric journey ahead.
